Meet Rachel

Therapy that moves at your pace, not anyone else’s.

I’m Rachel Van Sligtenhorst, a therapist who believes healing happens in relationship—with ourselves and with others. My style is warm, curious, and grounded in real life. You won’t get quick fixes or clichés. Instead, we’ll take the time to understand what’s really going on and what you need right now.

I work from a trauma-informed, attachment-based lens, drawing on approaches like EMDR, somatic awareness, and mindfulness. Together we’ll explore not just your thoughts, but also how stress and past experiences live in your body and relationships.

My practice is LGBTQ+ affirming, neurodiversity-affirming, body-inclusive, and rooted in respect for your lived experience and identities.

I

Is this for you?

Support for thoughtful, sensitive people navigating real-life overwhelm.

You might describe yourself as responsible, caring, the one others lean on—yet inside you’re exhausted, anxious, or unsure how to move forward. Therapy can help you reconnect with yourself, your needs, and your capacity to choose differently.

When anxiety runs the show

You’re always bracing for what could go wrong—overthinking decisions, replaying conversations, or feeling a constant hum of tension in your body.

  • Generalized anxiety & worry
  • Panic or social anxiety
  • Perfectionism & people-pleasing

Healing from past experiences

Old hurts or traumatic events may still shape how safe you feel with others, how you react under stress, or how you see yourself.

  • Childhood or family trauma
  • Relational & attachment wounds
  • Burnout and compassion fatigue

Finding yourself again

Maybe life looks “fine” from the outside, but you feel disconnected—going through the motions, unsure what you want, or who you are outside of responsibilities.

  • Life transitions & identity shifts
  • Relationship patterns you’d like to change
  • Wanting more ease, joy, and choice

What to expect

A gentle, clear path into therapy.

Reaching out can feel like the hardest step. My role is to make the process as simple, transparent, and collaborative as possible.

1

Free 20-minute consultation

We’ll connect by phone or secure video. You can share a bit about what’s going on, what you hope for, and ask any questions about therapy with me.

If it feels like a fit, we’ll schedule your first full session.

2

First few sessions

We’ll slow down and get to know your story: what’s feeling hard, what’s helped before, and what “feeling better” might look like for you. There’s no rush and no right way to show up.

We’ll begin gently experimenting with new skills, perspectives, and ways of relating.

3

Ongoing support & check-ins

As we work together, we’ll regularly check in about what’s helpful, what’s changing, and what you’d like more or less of in therapy.

You’ll never be “stuck” in therapy—we’ll collaborate on frequency, goals, and timing of ending when it’s right.

Questions, answered

It’s okay to take your time deciding.

The free consultation is truly a chance to explore whether we’re a good match. You won’t be pressured to commit, and you’re welcome to bring any logistical or emotional questions you have about starting therapy.

What happens in the free consultation?

We’ll meet by phone or secure video for about 20 minutes. I’ll invite you to share a little about what brings you to therapy and what you’re hoping for. I’ll also explain how I work, fees, and logistics. You’re welcome to ask anything—this time is for you to get a feel for me and for us to see if it feels like a good fit.

Do you offer online or in-person sessions?

I offer secure online sessions for clients throughout eligible regions, as well as in-person sessions in my office (when available and appropriate). We can talk in the consultation about which option feels best for you and your circumstances.

How often would we meet and for how long?

Most clients start with weekly 50-minute sessions to build momentum and a strong sense of safety in our work. Over time, we may adjust frequency based on your needs, goals, and life circumstances. We’ll make these decisions collaboratively, and you’ll never be locked into a certain number of sessions.

Is therapy with you right for me?

The best way to know is to have a conversation. If, during the consultation, I believe another type of support or a different therapist would better meet your needs, I’ll do my best to offer referrals or suggestions. My priority is that you receive care that truly fits.

Ready to see if therapy with Rachel feels right for you?

Take one small, kind step for yourself today. There’s no pressure to commit—just a conversation about what you’re carrying and how I might support you.
